Appositive Phrases
An appositive phrase is a noun or pronoun with modifiers (describing words.) It stands next to a noun and adds extra details.
To write an appositive phrase, do one of the following:

Combine two simple sentences.
EX: Saint Peter’s Prep is a school in Jersey City. Saint Peter’s Prep is popular.
Saint Peter’s Prep, a school in Jersey city, is popular.

Start with one noun or pronoun. Think of another noun or pronoun that renames it. Combine the two into one sentence.
EX: 1) To Kill a Mockingbird 2) a realistic fiction novel
To Kill a Mockingbird, a well-known realistic fiction novel, is read by high school students all over the country.
Participles and Participial Phrases
Participle: A verb form that can be used as an adjective
Ex. The crying child asked for his mother.
Participle Phrase: Consists of a participle together with its modifiers and complements. The entire phrase is used as an adjective.
Ex. The record broken by Jose Canseco was impressive.
